How To Rock Your Back To School 2019

Welcome to the 2019-2020 back-to-school season. Believe it or not, back-to-school time is the second biggest retail event of the year, right after the holiday season. This year, students and parents are expected to spend $80.7 billion on things like clothes, shoes, school supplies, electronics, and dorm furniture as they head back to America’s public schools and colleges.

The average household with students heading back to college will spend $976.78 this year, while the k-12 crowd is expected to spend $696.70 per household. For both groups, school supplies and apparel make up the top spending categories.

When you think about back-to-school shoppers, you may picture moms roaming the store aisles armed with school-issued supplies lists. In truth, school shopping is a family affair. Dads outspend moms on back-to-school shopping by $115. Teens are spending more of their own money on school supplies than pre-teens, $36.71 vs $26.40. And both teens and pre-teens will spend more of their own money on school supplies this year than they did last year.
